About European XFEL

Located in the heart of Europe, the European XFEL is a unique, international research facility that uses X-ray free-electron laser technology, enabling groundbreaking research in fields from molecular biology to physics. As one of the most advanced research facilities in the world, the European XFEL offers an inspiring and dynamic work environment in which pioneering science and technological excellence intersect.

The Role

As part of the European XFEL Management Board, which includes a Chairperson, an Administrative Director (both acting as Managing Directors), and three Scientific Directors, you will help steer the strategic direction of our operation. Alongside two other Scientific Directors, the Director for Instrumentation and Development leads one of three scientific divisions within European XFEL, starting at the latest on 1 January 2027: Operations and Data, Development and Instrumentation, and Science and Experiments.

Together, these Directors set the strategic course for a user-focused, technically excellent facility. In the Instrumentation and Development Division, you will oversee the design, development, and sustainability of the European XFEL’s advanced instrumentation and technical infrastructure, ensuring they support both immediate and long-term scientific goals.

As the European XFEL moves fully into the operational phase, while implementing comprehensive strategically important programs and preparing for a future facility upgrade, the responsibilities of this division will be instrumental in advancing our technological capabilities and fostering an efficient and resilient infrastructure.

Key Responsibilities

As our Director of Development and Instrumentation, your primary responsibilities will include:

  • Strategic Leadership in Instrumentation: Oversee major elements of the European XFEL’s scientific instrumentation and technical infrastructure, ensuring they meet the highest standards for cutting-edge research.

  • Technology Development and Strategic Activities: Drive and coordinate technology development in line with strategically important programs, promoting innovative approaches across disciplines.

  • Collaborative Excellence: Work closely with the other divisions to reinforce the European XFEL’s leadership in FEL technology, ensuring efficiency, resilience, and sustainability.

  • Infrastructure Sustainability and Upgrades: Oversee strategic programs and infrastructure upgrades, ensuring that the European XFEL’s technical infrastructure is robust, sustainable, and aligned with future scientific needs.

  • Sustainable Campus Development: Ensure the continuous development and functionality of our campus, building a resilient, eco-conscious facility that meets modern demands.

What We’re Looking For

We are seeking an accomplished scientist or engineer with a strong background in instrumentation for large-scale research infrastructures and a visionary approach to facility development. The ideal candidate has substantial experience in managing groups in a large-scale scientific facility, particularly in photon science.

Key qualifications include:

  • Scientific and Technical Expertise: Advanced university degree in a relevant field and a proven track record in building instrumentation for large-scale facilities; experience with accelerator and undulator systems is a strong asset.

  • Leadership Skills: Proven track record in managing diverse teams across divisions, with the ability to inspire and motivate teams toward common goals.

  • Collaborative Spirit: Ability to work as a committed team player, especially, within the Management Board, supporting a collaborative and productive work environment.

  • Long-Term Vision: Insight into sustainable facility development and operation, with a focus on future-proofing infrastructure.

  • Innovation and Problem-Solving: A creative approach to solving complex technical challenges in a multidisciplinary setting.

  • Effective Communication: Strong communication skills and the ability to inspire and engage staff and stakeholders across all levels.
