Call for expressions of interest

Currently there are no calls for expressions of interest open. Below is the information relevant to our previous calls, for your reference.

Call for expressions of interest in molecular water research at European XFEL

The European X-Ray Free-Electron Laser Facility (European XFEL) would like to open a call for Expressions of Interest from the scientific community on the focussed research topic of molecular water. We encourage the international research community to submit these short research descriptions about how their work will address open questions in the field of molecular water research using the unique capabilities of the European XFEL and its instruments. The deadline for this submission is 4 April 2022.

Feedback on the expressions of interest will be provided by the end of April. Authors of selected expressions of interest will be asked to submit a full proposal in the next proposal call in May-June 2022. Successful proposals will be allocated beamtime in the first half of 2023 (run 2023-01).

Please note that we are organizing a specific information session about this call for expressions of interest and the upcoming call for proposals at PETRAIII at DESY in the afternoon of 03 March 2022 in the framework of the Centre for Molecular Water Research Days (https://www.cmws-hamburg.de/) taking place on 2-4 March 2022. Registration is free of charge and the programme of the event is available under https://indico.desy.de/event/cmwsdays2022

Scientific excellence is the primary criterion for the acceptance of the final proposals in molecular water research submitted on the basis of this call for expressions of interest.

The involvement of an international team of co-proposers in the projects addressed by these expressions of interest would be welcome.

In order to submit an expression of interest discuss your project with the Leading Scientist of the concerned instrument (see contact list below), and submit through the specific electronic form by 04 April 2022. You will be requested to state your contact data and validate your email address before being able to proceed to the form.

Inquiries can be addressed to Sakura Pascarelli (sakura.pascarelli@xfel.eu), Scientific Director for hard X-ray instruments, Serguei Molodtsov (serguei.molodtsov@xfel.eu), Scientific Director for soft X-ray instruments and Sample Environment and Characterization, or the Leading Scientists of the Scientific Instruments:

Call for Expressions of Interest in Long-Term Proposals

The European X-Ray Free-Electron Laser Facility (European XFEL) would like to assess the interest by the scientific community and the future impact of long-term proposals on our user access programme. The scientific community worldwide is encouraged to submit expressions of interest in long-term research at our facility by 03 December 2021.

The topic was discussed at the virtual user information meeting held on 03 November 2021. More information is available on the online event page.

These projects may require a long-term commitment from EuXFEL to provide up to 60 hours beamtime per semester maximum, ideally evenly distributed during up to six scheduling periods.

Scientific excellence is the primary criterion for the acceptance of the final Long-Term Proposals (LTP) resulting from this call for expressions of interest. Below are further criteria that will be used in the evaluation:

  1. the socio-economic added-value of the new scientific opportunity that opens up for the community.
  2. a commitment from the proposing User group concerning the contribution of human resources during the implementation of the project (sabbaticals, Post Docs)
  3. an identifiable benefit to the EuXFEL User community (such as a new technique, a new instrument or new possibilities for the instrument) expected to result from the successful accomplishment of the goals for the LTP.
  4. the involvement of research groups from under-represented partner countries of the European XFEL.

In order to submit an expression of interest in long-term proposals, please discuss your project with the Leading Scientist of the concerned instrument, and submit through the specific electronic form by 03 December 2021.

Inquiries can be addressed to Sakura Pascarelli (sakura.pascarelli@xfel.eu), Scientific Director for hard X-ray instruments, Serguei Molodtsov (serguei.molodtsov@xfel.eu), Scientific Director for soft X-ray instruments and Sample Environment and Characterization, or the Leading Scientists of the concerned scientific instruments:
