European XFEL PhD programme

About the facility

Smaller, faster, more intense: European XFEL is opening up areas of research that were previously inaccessible. It is the world's largest X-ray laser and generates ultrashort X-ray flashes—27 000 times per second and with a brilliance that is a billion times higher than that of the best conventional X-ray radiation sources. Using the X-ray flashes of the European XFEL, international research groups are invited to perform their experiments at complex instrument stations where they can map the atomic details of viruses, decipher the molecular composition of cells, take three-dimensional images of the nanoworld, film chemical reactions, and study processes such as those occurring deep inside planets.

Our offer to PhD candidates

The PhD positions are fully funded for a duration of three years. In justified cases an extension is possible.

The salary amounts to 75% of pay group 13 for civil servants in Germany (TVöD Bund). Further benefits are similar to those of public service organizations in Germany. In addition, European XFEL provides a non-contributory company pension scheme, broad relocation benefits, a subsidised job-ticket for the local public transport system, as well as our company restaurant BeamStop.

Benefits for PhD candidates at European XFEL

European XFEL employs a diverse, broadly international staff. Non-German candidates hired from abroad receive an international allowance.

Become part of a vibrant international and multicultural team of scientists, engineers, technical, and administrative staff. Be involved in cutting-edge scientific and technical progress, participate in our international networks, and shape your life around trust-based flexible working times and telecommuting options. Experience our atmosphere of tolerance and respect.

The European XFEL PhD program goes far beyond classical PhD studies. You will have the opportunity to advance your professional, personal and methodical abilities, setting a solid foundation for your scientific career.

Candidates with a disability will be given preference over other equally qualified applicants. The European XFEL is an equal opportunity and affirmative action employer and encourages applications from women.
