Theory group

In 2014, a joint Theory group, including European XFEL and University of Hamburg members, was formed. The goal of the Theory group is to generate ideas for novel applications and design efficient methods to extract and analyze information from data acquired at the European XFEL and other FEL facilities.

Our research involves theory development and simulations ranging from the electronic structure of complex solids to the atomic and nanoscale structure of matter.

The Theory Group operates under scientific supervision of Prof. Dr. Alexander I. Lichtenstein from the I Institute for Theoretical Physics at the University of Hamburg, who has expertise in theoretical condensed matter and many-body physics. Cooperative work with scientists from different instruments as well as with users of the European XFEL is an essential component of our group activities.
