Wall Art in the European XFEL Guest House

Picture

Distributed throughout the Guest House, a total of 61 pieces of wall art tell a visual story of 16 main components of the European XFEL.

In each of the 16 rooms on the three upper floors of the Guest House visitors are greeted by large images of one of 16 selected components of the facility; from the injector and the accelerator to the photon systems, including the undulators or photon diagnostics, and the experiment stations. On each floor, the pictures are matched with the colour concept in the building. A selection of these 16 main motifs can also be found (in neutral colours) in the rooms on the ground floor and in the staircase. A walk through the building takes the visitor on a visual tour of the underground facility.

The artist Uta “Zaza” Röttgers produced this series of illustrations in collaboration with the European XFEL Communications Group. Uta Röttgers graduated from the Hamburg University of Applied Sciences (HAW Hamburg) in 2006 with a degree in communication design. She lives and works in Hamburg as a freelance illustrator, comic author, video editor and animator. Her work includes graphic novels and magazine contributions in the same genre. Her illustrations are included in permanent exhibitions at the smac – Staatliches Museum für Archäologie Chemnitz. She has also animated several of her illustrations for television.
