Visits

As a large international research facility, European XFEL offers insights into state-of-the-art research. In our future visitor centre – Lighthouse – we will inform the public in detail about the European XFEL on site. Until then, for capacity reasons, we can unfortunately only offer guided tours for groups of researchers, students and school students.

Public campus tour

A large part of the outdoor area of our premises is accessible to the public even without a guided tour: a campus tour along a green line provides information about the research facility with information boards. The signposted route is 1.6 km long and stretches from the entrance to the premises to the Düpenau river. Blue panels provide information about the buildings and underground facilities of the X-ray laser. Green panels explain compensation and renaturation measures, tree planting and bird and bat protection activities.

The campus is open daily from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., in winter until nightfall. Visitors are asked not to leave the area marked by the green line. The buildings – with the exception of the campus restaurant BeamStop – may not be entered for safety reasons. Children and young people are only admitted when accompanied by adults.

Campus Restaurant BeamStop

Our campus restaurant BeamStop is open to the public. On the BeamStop page you will find the opening hours, the current menu and further information.

Researchers, students, teachers and schools

We welcome groups of researchers and students to visit European XFEL. Visits within the framework of school lessons are also possible. For safety reasons, all visitors must be at least 14 years old. We recommend Science in School to teachers of STEM subjects. The magazine is published by EIROforum, an organisation of which European XFEL is a member. The subscription is free of charge.

Guided tours

Guided tours of our facility are free of charge and can be booked Monday to Friday between 10:00 and 17:00. The duration is 90-120 minutes including a 30-minute presentation as well as a tour of the experimental hall. Please send your booking request via our online form.
