Preparing for the construction, start of construction work in early 2009
The tendering for the underground constructions of the European XFEL (tunnel, shafts and buildings) is now in its final stage. DESY is expecting to place the three orders in November. Activities will then start on all three construction sites, DESY-Bahrenfeld, Osdorfer Born (both in Hamburg) and Schenefeld (in Schleswig-Holstein), in the first quarter of 2009.
The remaining time before civil engineering begins will be now used to prepare for the work on the construction sites. One of the most important measures is the expansion of the “Holzkoppel” road in Schenefeld, the 140-metre-long access road to the local European XFEL site. It will be widened to 6.50 m and complemented by a separate foot and bicycle path. The expansion of the “Holzkoppel” road has now started.
