Road upgrade in Schenefeld

Some days ago, the finishing works at the Holzkoppel road were running at full speed; including asphalting, road marking and cleaning of the new pavement flags. This was done because today, representatives from DESY, the road construction contractor and the city of Schenefeld met for the official takeover.

The 140 metres long Holzkoppel is the access road to the future European XFEL site in Schenefeld and it had to be upgraded to accommodate the upcoming lorry traffic which is to start in 2009. Therefore, in the past 18 weeks the road has been widened to 6,5 metres and on the west side, a separate pavement and bicycle path has been built as well. Moreover, a set of traffic lights has been installed at the crossroads with Osterbrooksweg road.

Already in the coming week construction will continue on the other side of the city. The Osterbrooksweg / Altonaer Chaussee / Industriestraße crossroads will be upgraded with the purpose to enhance their capacity to manage the increasing flow of traffic resulting from the construction site.
