Girls' Day at European XFEL

Research facility opened its doors to 20 schoolkids on 25 April

During Girls' Day on 25 April, 18 girls and two boys from grades four to eight had the opportunity to get to know work and research areas at European XFEL. After a presentation and a tour of the experiment hall, scientists and engineers gave an insight into different areas and job profiles of the facility. The half-day programme included exciting activities such as visiting a clean room, diamond anvil cell microscopy, controlling a motor and data analysis of experiments.

Managing Director Dr Nicole Elleuche was delighted with the interest shown by the participants.  "Every year, we are thrilled by the lively participation of particularly the girls during this event. I hope that we have been able to contribute to stirring their enthusiasm for scientific, technical and engineering subjects and related fields of work".

Girls' Day is a nationwide campaign to provide career and study insights to young girls. It is supported by the Federal Ministry for Family Affairs, Senior Citizens, Women and Youth and the Federal Ministry of Education and Research. On this day, girls visit companies and learn about careers or study subjects in which the proportion of women is less than 40 per cent, such as IT, trades and crafts, natural sciences and technology.
