Company restaurant opened on research campus

BeamStop serves snacks and warm meals for staff and visitors

Today, on the European XFEL research campus in Schenefeld near Hamburg, the new company restaurant BeamStop officially opened. It serves warm meals weekdays from 11:30 to 14:00 and snacks as well as hot and cold drinks until 15:00. It can seat a total of 150 guests and is open to European XFEL staff, users, guests, visitors, and the public.

European XFEL managing and administrative director Nicole Elleuche said: “The new restaurant is an important and eagerly awaited addition to our growing research campus here in Schenefeld. Very soon our sixth experiment station will start operation, and with it the number of users visiting us will triple as compared to this time last year. I am glad we are able to offer an additional place on campus to relax and recharge during long experiments. For our own staff members, as well as family members and visitors from the local area, the restaurant will also be a place to meet, talk, and enjoy good food together in a friendly, welcoming, and international atmosphere.”

The name “BeamStop” was chosen among a list of suggestions made by European XFEL staff in December 2018. Prices for food at the new company self-service restaurant will range from 1.50€ for a soup, or 2€ for a salad, to 5–8€ for a warm meal. Details about the weekly changing menu can be found under www.xfel.eu/beamstop. External visitors are invited to visit the canteen, just 150 metres from the main gate of the Schenefeld campus at Holzkoppel 4. Due to ongoing construction on the site, visitors are asked to stay in the area between the entrance, the company restaurant, and the main building.  External visitors are also asked not to enter any other buildings than BeamStop and not to walk on the grass.

Further development plans on the research campus include the construction of the European XFEL guesthouse with a total of 59 beds, providing visiting scientists with a convenient place to stay during experiments. Construction work is due to begin in summer 2019.
