First technical design reports for scientific instruments and beamlines published
A major milestone was achieved recently with the publication of the first three technical design reports (TDRs), describing the X-ray optics and beam transport systems and two of the scientific instruments.
The groups will now concentrate on devising the detailed technical layout, carrying out further R&D work, testing prototypes, and starting procurement. Technical design reports of other instruments are scheduled to be published in 2013.

The Technical Design Report: Scientific Instrument FXE presents the technical details required to design the Femtosecond X-Ray Experiments (FXE) instrument, which will be used for time-resolved X-ray absorption, emission, and diffuse-scattering studies.
The Technical Design Report: Scientific Instrument SQS describes the technical design of the Small Quantum Systems (SQS) instrument, which will enable scientists to investigate processes in atoms, ions, molecules and clusters occurring under highly intense beams using a variety of spectroscopy and imaging techniques.
The Technical Design Report: X-Ray Optics and Beam Transport describes the technical realization of the X-ray beam transport systems that will be used to guide the X-ray radiation to the scientific instruments. The report includes a discussion of radiation safety and equipment protection.
