European XFEL and 18 other German physics laboratories and institutes participated in the 2013 science festival and public exhibition Highlights der Physik in Wuppertal, Germany. This year’s event, the thirteenth of its kind, was hosted by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF), the German Physical Society (DPG), and the University of Wuppertal. It had the theme “From the Big Bang to the Universe”.

European XFEL’s exhibit featured a niobium accelerator cavity, an undulator magnet, and a film programme. Exhibitors talked about the facility’s progress with visitors of all ages, including schoolchildren, university students, scientists, and many local residents. The weeklong event, which began on 17 September, saw a total of 30 000 attendees.

Visitors to European XFEL’s booth at the science festival Highlights der Physik in Wuppertal learned about the major physical concepts behind the facility’s research and about its ongoing construction.
