European XFEL scientists speak at “Science on Tap”
On the evening of Thursday 17 November, scientists from institutes across the Hamburg metropolitan area spoke at many of the diverse and colourful bars and pubs throughout the city and its suburbs about some of the most mind-boggling questions and cutting-edge research in science. The second annual “Science on Tap” (Wissen vom Fass) was a forum for top scientists from institutes such as European XFEL, DESY, the University of Hamburg, and the Hamburg Observatory to describe to the public the science they’re working on, all while having a pint.
Three European XFEL scientists spoke at this year's event:
- At Lustis in Schenefeld, Leading Scientist Prof. Christian Bressler gave a talk about “Molecules as Film Stars” (“Moleküle als Filmstars”), describing the process of capturing the in-between steps of chemical reactions.
- At Bar Rossi in Hamburg-Sternschanze, Leading Scientist Adrian Mancuso spoke about “A Giant X-Ray Laser to See Tiny Biomolecules”, giving an overview of biology studies at the facility.
- At TBA//To Be Announced in Ottensen, Project Coordinator for Photon Systems Tobias Haas presented “On the Hunt for Viruses” (“Auf der Jagd nach Viren”), focusing on the possibilities the European XFEL will offer for research into complex biological structures such as viruses.
