Laserday: Great interest in the Lighthouse Science Action Day

Tours, experiments and lectures attracted many visitors to the European XFEL Campus

The Lighthouse Science Visitor Centre in Schenefeld attracted a large and diverse audience on Saturday's ‘Laser Day’ science event. Guided tours of the underground experimental hall, lectures by laser scientists, the interactive science exhibition and hands-on laser experiments offered a suitable programme for all guests. The large laser show by Pinneberg light artist Florian Sieck above the campus plaza fascinated all age groups. With more than 1,200 guests, there were significantly more visitors than the Lighthouse team had expected.

The tours of the underground experimental hall and the presentations on the topic of ‘Lasers’ by Dr Maximilian Lederer, Senior Scientist at European XFEL, and Dr Toma Toncian, Head of the HIBEF project at the European XFEL, Helmholtz-Zentrum Dresden-Rossendorf, met with particular interest. The hands-on experiments in the ‘Xcool Lab’ physics school laboratory were also very popular, especially with families. Due to the great interest, queues formed from time to time.

‘We are very pleased about the huge interest in science and the programmes on offer at the Lighthouse - we were pleasantly surprised,’ says Bernd Ebeling from the Lighthouse team. ‘Of course, a lot of things can only be presented briefly on an activity day. But if you want to find out more, you can find more offers and events - guided tours, hands-on Saturdays, lectures or experiment days for school classes on the homepage. All offers are free of charge and are aimed at different age groups.’

Planning for the next events has already begun. Prof. Dr Thomas Feurer, Chairman of the European XFEL Management Board, will provide insights into the ‘Physics of Skiing’ on 6 March and there will be another tour of the experimental hall on 8 March. The big open day on the campus is then planned for 28 June as the summer highlight. There will once again be an exciting programme for families and experts.
