The first three apprentice trainees at European XFEL started in September: Two future industrial mechanics and one electronics technician. The new trainees will spend a large part of their training in the 400 square metre mechanics workshop and in the electronics workshop of the warehouse and workshop building on the European XFEL campus, which was opened in September 2018. Here are machines for metal processing with the possibility of manufacturing parts of the instruments and experimental stations of the X-ray laser and doing repairs on site. Training will also regularly take place in the experiment hall, where teams of scientists from all over the world carry out their experiments.

European XFEL Managing Director Prof. Robert Feidenhans'l said: "We are very pleased that we are now able to offer two training courses in the field of craftsmanship and technology. We hope that our trainees will feel at home in our international environment. European XFEL offers a challenging, very interesting working environment, and we are planning to hire more trainees in the future."

The prerequisites for training at the world's largest X-ray laser are an interest in technology, technical skills and a good spatial imagination. Knowledge of English is an advantage. The next round of applications will probably not be until 2021. The trainees are part of the international team at European XFEL with more than 400 employees from almost 50 countries.

In addition to training positions in the technical and crafts fields, European XFEL has been involved in the training of students for many years, including positions for masters and doctoral theses.
