The European XFEL will make available X-rays of unique quality for studies in physics, chemistry, life sciences, materials research and others. Located in the Hamburg area, Germany, it will comprise scientific instruments for a wide range of experimental techniques. Construction of the European XFEL is underway and its commissioning is scheduled for 2014. The European XFEL GmbH is a multi-national non-profit company with DESY as the German shareholder.

The European XFEL will generate photon beams in the X-ray energy range, with a so far unrivalled brilliance, making high demands on the detector systems. We have established an international collaboration focused on 2D silicon pixel sensors, with the goal to develop 4Mpix imaging detectors with Mhz readout. For this R&D program we are looking for three

Detector scientists (f/m)

The positions

  • participation in the 2D pixel detector development program for the scietific instruments at the European XFEL
  • participation and taking over a leading role during the optimization, implementation, calibration and commissioning phase of the detectors
  • interface to and support of external detector consortia
  • interface with scientists and engineers of related work packages like DAQ systems and the scientific instrument groups
  • support of the group head to build up the detector group and the infrastructure for detector R&D at the European XFEL

Requirements

  • PhD in physics or engineering
  • experience in at least one of the following fields: development, implementation, calibration, commissioning and/or operation of advanced photon detectors and/or particle detectors
  • profound knowledge of the physics of detectors and scientific instrumentation
  • experience in data analysis and profound knowledge of programming languages like C, C++, Java or IDL is an asset
  • good communication skills and ability to work in an international and multi-disciplinary team of scientists, engineers and industrial partners

Duration

This appointment is initially limited to 3 years.
