Job offer

This job offer is closed.

The European XFEL will deliver X-rays of unique quality for new studies in physics, chemistry, life sciences, materials research, and other fields requiring intense and coherent X-radiation. Located in the Hamburg area, Germany, it will comprise new scientific instruments for a wide range of experimental techniques. Construction of the European XFEL is underway and its commissioning is scheduled for 2014. The European XFEL GmbH is a multi-national non-profit company with DESY as the main shareholder. We are looking for a

(Postdoctoral) scientist for time-resolved X-ray scattering (f/m)

in the Femtosecond X-Ray Experiments Group (FXE). This group also designs and constructs an advanced scientific instrument dedicated to this type of research. We are currently active in chemical dynamics re-search and solid state physics. We offer participation in ongoing collaborations with international groups working on the forefront of time-resolved X-ray science.

The position

  • participate in time-resolved X-ray studies at pulsed X-ray sources, including LCLS, Petra-III, next to other 3rd generation synchrotron radiation sources
  • aid in the implementation of XRD tools for time-resolved-studies
  • participate in designing a hard x-ray diffraction endstation at the future FXE instrument, which will make full use of the special beam parameters coming from free electron lasers. This includes interaction with the XFEL detector and data acquisition (DAQ) groups, who are constructing area detectors and readout-systems suited for the operation at the European XFEL

Requirements

  • proven record in experimental physics, chemical physics or a related discipline
  • good knowledge and hands-on experience with x-ray scattering and/or other diffraction techniques and instrumentation
  • the ability to conduct independent research as well as to show teamwork spirit, especially during the beamtime periods
  • an exceptional motivation to learn and apply new experimental techniques and to contribute enthusiastically to an innovative research programme in the field of structural dynamics
