Job offer

This Job offer is open

The European XFEL will deliver X-rays of unique quality for new studies in physics, chemistry, life sciences, materials research, and other fields requiring intense and coherent X-radiation. Located in the Hamburg area, Germany, it will comprise new scientific instruments for a wide range of experimental techniques. Construction of the European XFEL is underway and its commissioning is scheduled for 2014. The European XFEL GmbH is a multi-national non-profit company with DESY as the main shareholder. We are looking for a

(Postdoctoral) scientist in
gas phase soft X-ray science (f/m)

The position

  • You will be part of a new research group studying photoionization dynamics of atoms and molecules in intense ultra-short laser fields. Besides carrying out ambitious in-house research projects, the group is committed to build the instrument dedicated to the physics of Small Quantum Systems at the European XFEL.
  • You will be actively involved in forefront research activities at the free-electron laser facilities FLASH in Hamburg, Germany and LCLS in Stanford, California. The scientific output and technical knowledge obtained in these experiments are important aspects in the design and construction of the corresponding instrument at the European XFEL.
  • In particular, you will be responsible for the operation of an intense femtosecond laser system and the installation of a high harmonic generation (HHG) set-up to be used initially in our laser lab for time-resolved pump-probe experiments.

Requirements

  • PhD in experimental physics
  • experience with ultrafast optical lasers
  • experience in ultrafast time-resolved investigations using HGG sources and/or X-ray radiation
  • experience with spectroscopic techniques for photoionization studies
  • experience in building and implementing scientific instruments at synchrotron, FEL or high-power laser facilities will be of advantage
  • good communication skills and ability to work in an international team of physicists and engineers
