The European XFEL will make available X-rays of unique quality for studies in physics, chemistry, life sciences, materials research and others. Located in the Hamburg area, Germany, it will comprise scientific instruments for a wide range of experimental techniques. Construction of the European XFEL is underway and its commissioning is scheduled for 2014. The European XFEL GmbH is a non-profit company with DESY as the main shareholder.

For the development and implementation of high end data management systems we invite highly qualified scientists to apply for the position as

Data management software developer (f/m)

The successful candidate will be a member of our DAQ & controls team at the European XFEL.

The position

  • participating in defining the requirements for data management systems such as data aggregation, data caching, offline data and metadata handling, remote access to data, etc.
  • selection of the software solutions and tools to satisfy the requirements defined
  • participating in the development and debugging of prototype and production systems
  • participating in the long term support of systems developed and those already in design
  • interaction with European XFEL facility users

Requirements

  • experience in the management of large data volumes including secure storage, file transfer services and access control
  • experience in using Grid based services
  • profound knowledge of database systems (schema design, SQL)
  • hands-on long term experience of developing and integrating large scale scientific projects
  • extensive programming skills (e.g. C, C++, Java, J2EE, scripting, web applications)
  • in depth knowledge of software related tools and IDEs (e.g. SVN, Ant, make, Netbeans, Eclipse…)
  • an understanding of the need for testing, bug tracing and documentation, and to have used these tools during project development
