Science Day reaches out to more than 300 guests of Turkish origin
Joint event with DESY showcases cooperation between German and Turkish scientists and institutes
On Saturday afternoon, more than 300 people took part in a science day jointly organized by DESY, European XFEL, and the Turkish Consulate General demonstrating the longstanding research cooperation between Germany and Turkey. The event was particularly focused on younger guests and several activities aimed at local pupils and science students of Turkish origin in the Hamburg metropolitan area.
The science day was part of a follow-up to the 2014 German–Turkish Year of Research, Education, and Innovation. The event featured a short tour of facilities and workshops on the DESY research campus as well as the European XFEL accelerator tunnel, exhibits about research at both facilities, and the opportunity for students and the public to talk directly with scientists.
It was one of the goals of the German-Turkish Year to better promote and publicize our research also to the Turkish communities in Hamburg,“ said Frank Lehner, coordinator for international cooperations and strategic partnerships at DESY. „It was also rewarding to see that so many Turkish colleagues from DESY and European XFEL volunteered with great enthusiasm and contributed to the science day program and its activities.“
