Minister Alheit visits European XFEL

Science minister learns about facility progress during visit

The Minister for Social Affairs, Health, Science, and Equality of the Federal State of Schleswig-Holstein, Kristin Alheit, visited the Schenefeld site of European XFEL today. She was greeted on the facility’s construction site by European XFEL Managing Directors Massimo Altarelli and Claudia Burger as well as DESY Director Helmut Dosch. Minister Alheit was informed about the scientific goals and planned operation of the facility, as well as ideas for building a visitor or science centre on the site.

On a tour of a future laboratory, the experiment hall, and tunnels of the facility, the Minister was briefed about the construction and installation progress of the new research facility, where, from 2017 on, scientists from all over the world will conduct their research.

Minister Alheit referred to the many scientific opportunities that the facility will bring to Schleswig-Holstein. “The construction of the European XFEL is a huge step towards strengthening the whole region as a location for research”, she said. “With it Northern Germany will be a particularly attractive region for the best minds in the natural sciences.” The project is also a prime example of the collaboration between Schleswig-Holstein and Hamburg on scientific research. The European XFEL tunnels permanently connect the DESY campus in Bahrenfeld with the research building in Schenefeld, thus bringing the two states closer together.
